hello autumn

welcome autumn!

and so begins a season of plenty..

of colours, flavours and changes.

we are just beginning to pick our

aurora, mcgowen, spartan, fuji, and jonagold apples.

our gala, cortland and macintosh are still plentiful.

every one of these apples are brilliant to eat fresh, and wonderful to bake with.

the macs are a little sweeter and softer now that their harvest is almost over.

aurora

aren’t these beautiful?

auroras are sweet, extremely juicy and the perfect size for a snack!

a wonderful addition to a salad too!

their thin skin makes them quite fragile..pick with care.

this baby orchard is only in its fifth leaf.

it’s remarkable how such a tiny tree can produce so many apples!

mcgowen

most definitely the cutest, smallest apple we grow..freckles and all!

they are a cross between a mac and a jersey black.

sweet, firm and juicy with hints of strawberries and spices.

brilliant for snacking. you could bake with mcgowens, but i find them too small to peel.

spartan

sweet, mellow and crunchy..another apple from the macintosh family

with a lovely balance of sweet and tart.

lots of juice with low acidity makes this a favoured

apple to press for cider or juice.

spartans are also terrific to cook with because they hold their shape well.

fuji

mildly sweet with a little tartness and great crunch!

kids love their thin, tender peel.

a petite apple that is fabulous for snacking,

and also a great baking apple.

jonagold

a cross of a jonathan and golden delicious..

you will love this large, firm, sweet and very juicy apple!

a gorgeous apple for eating fresh and also baking.

they are best enjoyed soon after picking, as they don’t store well.

our sunflowers are still blooming!

some fields have gone to seed.

there is always a charm of finches playing there.

are you thinking about halloween yet?

we have a pumpkin patch!

and we have fresh cider for you!

 the taste of pure autumn!

these are being pressed today!

have you noticed the changing colours?

our valley is getting prettier every day!

happy autumn!

hope we see you soon,

hugs,

Thursday 17 September 2020

goodbye summer

ohhh the last official weekend of summer..
and time to dig out your sweaters!

we have a gorgeous selection of apples for you to pick!
our cortland, royal gala, honey gold, and honeycrisp apples
are now ripe and available.
we are still picking
macintosh, silken and gingergold apples.

cortland

these are my absolute favourite!
for both eating fresh and baking, their complex flavour is wonderful.
not too sweet and not too tart!
they keep their shape well in a tart or pie.
they also resist browning..fabulous to slice on a cheese plate.
i used them in a rose tart recently. they perfectly complimented a sweet pastry.
i love how they grow in twos.
our friend trudy calls them the kissing apples!

royal gala

galas are sweet and mellow!
i love their dainty size and gorgeous pink colour!
perfect for little hands and tummies.
they are my favourite to photograph
because they are also my favourite colour!

honey gold

honey golds are very similar to a golden delicious,
but much sweeter and milder in flavour.
they are juicy and crisp with a lovely creamy flesh.
they store very well.
you can substitute these whenever a recipe calls for golden delicious.

honey crisp

sweet and slightly tart, crisp and juicy..their name says it all!
almost too big for one person..
they could be a first date apple to share!
this is such a favourite that we have planted more honey crisp orchards for you.

did you know we have our own apple cider?
it’s a lovely blend of our early apples.
it was pressed today.
you can try a cup down at the river, then bring home a jug.
you can freeze it too!

hope you are well and can enjoy these last summer days that are already feeling like fall!

hugs,

Friday 11 September 2020

welcome and welcome back!

and just like that we have opened our gate again this year to invite you in!

we are picking gingergold, macintosh and silken apples.

there are a few gravensteins too.

gingergold

a gorgeous, mellow, sweet early apple.

these are lovely to use in a pie or tart, because they keep their shape.

they will store in your fridge for a month.

this was my first apple of the year, picked on a recent evening with friends.

macintosh

if september had a flavour,

it would be this legendary apple!

tart, crisp and juicy...perfect for a lunch box and perfect for your teacher!

macs are great for sauce too!

if you leave the skin on, your sauce will be pink!

they are wonderful for juicing and pressing for cider.

silken

oh these are just delightful!

silkens are very juicy, crisp, and sweet.

their smooth delicate skin,

and smaller size make them a snacking favourite!

 gravenstein

you have to try this old variety!

crisp and tart with a whisper of sweetness.

another lovely apple for baking,

but not great for storing.

enjoy them while you can!

i hope your back to school week has been great.

so many changes!

 be well..stay healthy

an apple a day may help!

hugs,

laura
