happy thanksgiving weekend!
although our crop of apples is very limited this year,
we do have a fabulous selection..
mutsu, jonagold, empire, idared, smoothie and russet apples
are available for you to pick.
of course availability will depend on how many guests visit us.
these are the most peculiar of all our apples..
rough patches of skin, known as russeting gives them their name.
russets are tart, with a nutty and pear like flavour and texture.
shakespeare wrote about them as “leather coats”.
they are great to include in apple sauce and cider blends.
russets are lovely to add to a savoury soup.
have a peek at previous posts for other tasting profiles.
i love traditions..and pumpkin pie!
oh and whipped cream too!
our kids grew 2 specialties for your pumpkin pie..
meet autumn luxury pumpkin
and honeynut squash
i used jennifer emilson’s delicious pie recipe again this year.
that’s how we learned about honeynut squash!
she’s a delight to follow on instagram @thelemonapron.
i so looking forward to her cook book.
i do hope you can make a pie or two..
pumpkin purée freezes well.. so do baked pies!
there are oodles of pumpkins for you.
you can pick one from our patch, or
from ones we have picked for you.
do you know we have a special place to wash your pumpkin too?
we are so grateful that we are healthy and able to invite you into our orchard.
thank you for letting us be a part of your family’s traditions.
happy thanksgiving!
be well,
laura
