hello october!
i am sorry i missed posting about last week’s harvest.
it’s too heartbreaking to share why.
we have an absolutely brilliant selection of apples for you this weekend.
you may pick our
honeycrisp, honeygold, royal gala, cortland, silken,
cox orange pippin, fortune, mcgowen, fuji,
spartan, jonagold, and macintosh apples.
there’s something for every apple lover!
some varieties are from our baby orchards and may be new to you.
we encourage you to try them.
cox orange pippin
i always say it with an english accent,
because it was an english guest that first told me about these.
their intricate taste makes them a favourite apple in the uk.
cox orange pippin have a range and complexity of flavours..
spicy, rich, honeyed with a hint of nuttiness.
notes of melons, pears, orange and mango are all evident.
they are a dessert apple..best enjoyed fresh, and wonderful for juicing or making cider.
fortune
aren’t these gorgeous?
fortunes’s parents are a red spy and an empire..
a delightful pleasant blend of sweet and tart,
they are fabulous to eat fresh and excellent to cook with.
mcgowen
such a dainty little apple with adorable freckles.
these are so sweet and crunchy.. a definite favourite for little ones.
they are a bit of a secret.. but if you know, you know.
sadly infamous for falling off the trees too soon.. scoop them while you can.
fuji
another sweet, firm, crisp and juicy dessert apple enjoyed out of hand or in a salad.
great for baking in pies, tarts, and galettes as they hold their shape well when baked.
honeygold
similar in appearance to a ginger gold.. these too have cute freckles.
(scientifically known as lenticels.)
they are sweet, and comparable to a golden delicious,
but with a lovely smidgen of tartness.
another dessert apple to love, but also great to cook with.
spartan
a delicious small, sweet apple.. perfect for small sweet hands.
very juicy and with low acidity, they are a wise choice for juicing or pressing.
spartans also cook well, keeping their shape in a galette, tart or pie.
cortland
just as the weather begins to cool, apples best for baking become available.
flavourful and juicy.. i love to enjoy these fresh
but they also make an excellent fruit crisp or pie, or galette.
they are still my favourite!
cortlands are slow to discolour when sliced.
it’s adorable how they grow in twos..
our friend trudy calls them the kissing apples!
honey crisp
such a treasured apple and perfectly named!
we have a fabulous crop this year.
jonagold
tangy and sweet with honey like flavour notes..
the perfect blend of its parents: a golden delicious and a jonathan.
jonagolds are excellent for everything.. eating fresh, baking, pies and sauces.
to quote anne shirley of green gables fame
“i am so glad i live in a world where there are octobers.”
see you soon for a delicious october visit.
hugs,
laura
